His resume looked likeeveryone elses Unless you have a ton of great experiences or come pre-recommend, you have to make sure that your resume stands out from the dozens of other resumes that recruiters and hiring managers see each andevery day.The ways you can make your resume stand out are limited only by your creativity and basic common senseregardingwhats appropriate in business contexts. Lets look at seven examples I recommend of ways to make your resume stand out.1. The Story ResumeA story resume takes your experiences and qualifications and weaves them together into a coherent and clear narrative. You want to aim for less than a page in length and include all relevant information about yourself, your education, your experiences, and where you ultimately see yourself at the company to which you are applying.2 . The Sales-Page ResumePhillip Dubost created the most famous sales-page resume when he createdan Amazon-style profile as his resume a few years back.I have helped clients develop a wide variety of sales-page resumes both in print and online. A sales-page resumeis one of the easiest and most effective ways to stand out.3. The Delicious ResumeThis is the riskiestof the creative resume ideas Im sharing today, but a small personalized gift of foodcould beagreat way to make your resume stand out.A former client of mine, Charlene, sent a batch of homemade chocolate ic cookies to the P.R. agency she was applying to and shewas called in for an interview the very next day.4. The Video ResumeA video resume is an easy way to display your personality. I recommend that yourvideo resume be less than three minutes long.Use a program like Camtasia to combine video of yourself with video of your computer screen, where you can display a PowerPoint presentation that covers your accomplishments and r esume.5. The Colorful Resume Anotlageher easy way to stand out, especially when turning in a paper resume, is to print your resume on paper that isnt white. For example, quite a few of my job seekers have gotten jobs using resumeswith black type printed on red paper.6. The Over- or Undersized Resume A great tip for going to networking events is to create a business-card-sized resume you can hand out. I recommend placing a picture of yourself and your contact info on the front of the card and printing your resume info on the back. You can also go the opposite direction and blow up your resume, printing it on largerpaper and usinglarger fonts.7. The Example ResumeThe last creative resume I want to share with you is what I call the example resume. With the example resume, you turn in not just your resume, but alsoan example of the work you would be doing for the company. My student Mark was applying for a job managing areal estate companys website. Margaret Sullivan The two words you need to get promoted
Margaret Sullivan The two words you need to get promotedMargaret Sullivan The two words you need to get promotedThis essay originally appeared in The Lily, a publication of The Washington Post.Im still annoyed with my mother for the advice she gave me. And thats really saying something, since her counsel came more than 30 years ago, and Mom is no longer around for me to (lovingly ever so lovingly) shake my fist at.I welches fresh out of school and starting my summer internship at ur hometown newspaper, The Buffalo News. And my parents, having paid a lot of tuition bills, were understandably eager for me to do that very adult thing Get a Real Job.So as I prepared for my first day, while briefly sharing my childhood bedroom again with my stuffed animals, Mom offered me a two-word formula for success Ingratiate yourself. It struck me then (and still does) as a fairly awful thing to say. Wouldnt my success as a young reporter have a lot more to do with my ability to work sources, write on deadline, and be aggressive, fair and accurate?Wasnt she, essentially, telling me to suck up?That seemed like the dead opposite of the journalistic integrity I admired in my journalistic idols, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein of the Washington Post. Surely, David Halberstam of The New York Times did not have to ingratiate himself. And besides, wasnt our culture giving young women plenty of cues to please other people without my (normally strong and independent-minded) mother piling on.And I stayed at the paper for many years. Before I left in 2012 to become the first female public editor of the New York Times, I had broken quite a few glass ceilings at The News I was the first woman named to newsroom management, the first woman managing editor, and the first woman editor-in-chief. (In 1999, when I got that top editing job, there were only 13 of us?- ?female chief editors?- ?at Americas largest 100 newspapers. So it was rare to have a woman calling the shots. Sadly, it still is. Tod ay, the highest ranks of Fortune 500 companies include only 32 women, a lousy six percent.)Looking back, I grudgingly can give Mom credit for what I think she was getting at (though I still wish she had said it better). I think she was talking about whats now known as emotional intelligence.Emotional intelligence holds that its not simply I.Q. points that matter. Brains are necessary, yes, and talent sure helps. But so does the human element Do people like you and want to help you succeed? Are you willing to ask for some help, to listen and learn, to show appreciation?Last week, a young journalist asked me for some advice in getting a job at a major publication. He asked me in a Twitter direct message if I had any pointers. I knew something about the job and the editors and I thought hed be a good fit. Heres what I told him in a return direct message Have a lot of story ideas, including in the digital realm, and come off like a total self-starter.Theres nothing brilliant there, of c ourse, but what I was telling him, essentially, was to put himself in the place of the hiring editors and think about what they would want. What would help them succeed in their mission? They would surely want someone eager and energetic, someone who doesnt have to be prodded but who takes the initiative, and someone who can immediately begin contributing. Obviously, if the quality of the story ideas is poor, or if my young friend cant write, or if his digital skills are shaky, this advice is worthless. But if he has all the necessary ingredients, this empathy with the bossess needs would probably help him to gain favor?- ?which is literally what ingratiate means.Dont get me wrong. There is no substitute for integrity, not in journalism or any other field. In Hamlet, Shakespeares Polonius gave a far oben liegend piece of parental advice to his son Laertes. This above all To thine own self be true. I can think of countless times in my career when making the unpleasant move was also t he right move In suspending a plagiarist in writing a tough public-editor column in killing a story that wasnt solid enough for publication. But you may never get in a position to do those righteous things without emotional know-how and basic likability. Maybe Mom knew something, after all.

9 stupid rules that make great people quit
9 stupid rules that make great people quit9 stupid rules that make great people quitIts tough to hold on to good employees, but it shouldnt be. Most of the mistakes that companies make are easily avoided. When you do make mistakes, your best employees are the first to go, because they have the fruchtwein options. If you cant keep your best employees engaged, you cant keep your best employees. While this should be common sense, it isnt common enough. Companies need to have rules- thats a given- but they dont have to be foolish and lazy attempts at creating order.I understand the temptation. Asmy companyhas grown, so has our difficulty maintaining standards. There have been many instances where someone crossed a line, and we were tempted to respond with a new rule that applied to everyone. But thats where most companies blow it.In just about every instance, upon closer inspection, we realized that establishing a new rule would be a passive and morale-killing way to address the problem. T he vast majority of the time, the problem needs to be handled one-on-one by the employees manager.Ladders is now on SmartNewsDownload the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.When companies create ridiculous and demoralizing rules to halt the outlandish behavior of a few individuals, its a management problem. Theres no sense in alienating your entire workforce because you dont know how to manage performance. It makes a schwimmbad situation that much worse.Lets explore some of the worst rules that companies create when they fall into this trap and see if we cant influence people to think differently about making rules in the workplace. The six-month ruleMost companies wont let you transfer or get promoted until youve held a position for six months. This rule harms the company and the employee by holding people in roles that theyre not suited for. Companies might have gotten away with this rule when our parents were enterin g the workforce, but these days good people are more likely to jump ship, rather than wait around for some arbitrary rule to kick in.An employees manager should have the freedom to decide when an employee is ready for a promotion or would perform better in a different role.Ridiculous requirements for attendance, leave, and time offPeople are salaried for the work they do, not the specific hours they sit at their desks. When you ding salaried employees for showing up five minutes late even though they routinely stay late and put in time on the weekend, you send the message that policies take precedence over performance. It reeks of distrust, and you should never put someone on salary that you dont trust. When companies are unnecessarily strict in requiring documentation for bereavement and medical leave, it leaves a sour taste in the mouths of employees who deserve better. After all, if you have employees who will fake a death to miss a days work, what does that say about your company ?Shutting down self-expressionMany organizations control what people can have at their desks. A life-size poster of a shirtless Fabio? I get it thats a problem. But employers dictate how many photographs people can display, whether or not they can use a water bottle, and how many items theyre allowed to place on their desks. Once again, its the ol If I could just hire robots I wouldnt have this problem approach.Same goes for dress codes. They work well in private high schools, but theyre unnecessary at work. Hire professionals and theyll dress professionally. When someone crosses the line, their manager needs to have the skill to address the issue directly. Otherwise, youre making everyone wish they worked somewhere else because management is too inept to handle touchy subjects effectively.Restricting internet useThere are certain sites that no one should be visiting at work, and Im not talking about facebook inc. But once you block pornography and the other obvious stuff, its a dif ficult and arbitrary process deciding where to draw the line. Most companies draw it in the wrong place.People should be able to kill time on the Internet during breaks. When companies unnecessarily restrict peoples Internet activity, it does more than demoralize those that cant check Facebook it limits peoples ability to do their jobs. Many companies restrict Internet activity so heavily that it makes it difficult for people to do online research. The most obvious example? Checking the Facebook profile of someone you just interviewed.Bell curves and forced rankings of performanceSome individual talents follow a natural bell-shaped curve, but job performance does not. When you force employees to fit into a pre-determined ranking system, you do three things 1) incorrectly evaluate peoples performance, 2) make everyone feel like a number, and 3) create insecurity and dissatisfaction when performing employees fear that theyll be fired due to the forced system. This is yet another exampl e of a lazy policy that avoids the hard and necessary work of evaluating each individual objectively, based on his or her merits.Banning mobile phonesIf I ban mobile phones in the office, no one will waste time texting and talking to family and friends, right? Ya, right. Organizations need to do the difficult work of hiring people who are trustworthy and who wont take advantage of things. They also need to train managers to deal effectively with employees who underperform and/or violate expectations (such as spending too much time on their phones). This is also hard work, but its worth it. The easy, knee-jerk alternative (banning phones) demoralizes good employees who need to check their phones periodically due to pressing family or health issues or as an appropriate break from work.Stealing employees frequent-flyer milesIf theres one thing that road-weary traveling employees earn, its their frequent flier miles. When employers dont let people keep their miles for personal use, its a greedy move that fuels resentment with every flight. Work travel is a major sacrifice of time, energy, and sanity. Taking employees miles sends the message that you dont appreciate their sacrifice and that youll hold on to every last dollar at their expense.Draconian e-mail policiesThis is a newer one thats already moving down a slippery slope. Some companies are getting so restrictive with e-mail use that employees must select from a list of pre-approved topics before the e-mail software will allow them to send a message.Again, its about trust. If you dont trust your people to use e-mail properly, why did you hire them in the first place? In trying to rein in the bad guys, you make everyone miserableeverytime they send an e-mail. And guess what? The bad guys are the ones who will find ways to get around any system you put in place.Pathetic attempts at political correctnessMaintaining high standards for how people treat each other is a wonderful thing as we live in a world thats r ife with animosity and discrimination. Still employers have to know where to draw the line. Going on a witch-hunt because someone says Bless you to another employee that sneezed (real example) creates an environment of paranoia and stifled self-expression, without improving how people treat each other.Bringing it all togetherIf companies can rethink their policies and remove or alter those that are unnecessary or demoralizing, well all have a more enjoyableandproductive time at work.Travis Bradberryis the co-author ofEmotional Intelligence 2.0,and the cofounder ofTalentSmart. This article first appeared on LinkedIn.

How to Fly a General Aviation Traffic Pattern
How to Fly a General Aviation Traffic PatternHow to Fly a General Aviation Traffic PatternCurious how airplanes get in and out of airports when theres no control tower? The short story is that they use a rectangular besucherzahlen pattern, entering and departing at common areas in the pattern and otherwise flying a predictable path through the air at a known altitude while making radio calls. Thats it. It works, most of the time. Now, heres the longer version. Light aircraft are expected to fly a traffic pattern around an airport. At small, non-towered fields, airports are allowed to enter and depart pretty much however theyd like to. Technically, they can fly circles instead of rectangles, and they can fly to and from while doing barrel rolls if they so desire (except the FAA make take issue with that and invoke Part 91.13, which says that nobody can act in a way that endangers others). But there is a voreingestellt pattern that (most) pilots fly in and out of airports, and its a re ctangle with six different parts, or legs. Direction A standard traffic pattern is flown to the left, meaning the aircraft makes left turns in the pattern. Non-standard, or right-turn, patterns do exist to avoid terrain or obstacles, or for noise abatement procedures, but the standard pattern is to the left. Altitude The pattern is flown at approximately 1,000 feet AGL, or above ground level, or at the recommended altitude found in the airport/facility directory published by the FAA. This altitude may vary depending on obstacle clearance, terrain, and noise abatement procedures. For an airport at sea level, the traffic pattern altitude would be 1,000 feet MSL. For an airport with an elevation of 5,500 feet, the traffic pattern altitude would be about 6,500 feet MSL (as read on the aircrafts altimeter). Airspeed All pilots are required to comply with speed restrictions of not more than 200 knots in traffic patterns and should adjust speed to match other aircraft in the pattern as abl e. The traffic pattern can be divided into 6 parts The departure leg, crosswind leg, downwind leg, base leg, final, and upwind. Departure Leg As one might assume, the departure leg is the path that the airplane flies right after departure. During the departure leg, the pilot climbs the airplane in a straight path out from the runway centerline, either visually means - looking outside to maintain an extended centerline - or by maintaining runway heading on the heading indicator. The pilot will maintain this extended runway centerline until reaching at least 300 feet below the traffic pattern altitude. For a traffic pattern altitude of 1,000 feet MSL, the pilot might begin his turn to the crosswind leg of the pattern at approximately 700 feet, continuing to climb throughout the turn and Crosswind Leg The crosswind leg occurs after the first 90-degree turn is made upon reaching about 300 feet below pattern altitude during the departure leg to a position perpendicular to the run way. The pilot should continue the climb to pattern altitude during the crosswind leg. This leg lasts just a few seconds for most light aircraft at approximately one-half mile distance from the runway, the pilot will make another turn to the downwind leg of the pattern.?? Downwind Leg About one-half mile away horizontal distance from the runway in use, the pilot should turn to the downwind leg, which parallels the runway and is flown opposite the landing direction. The aircraft will be heading with the wind or in the direction that the wind is blowing. The pilot flies the length of the runway at the specified pattern altitude and begins to configure for a landing, perhaps completing a before landing checklist, adding flaps and/or ensuring that the gear is down and locked during this phase. Abeam (90 degrees perpendicular to) the landing point, or the departure end of the runway on downwind, the pilot will likely reduce power and begin a gradual descent. Base Leg At a positi on on downwind, beyond and at about a 45-degree point from the approach end of the runway, the pilot should begin a medium bank turn to the base leg, again perpendicular to the landing runway. The pilot continues his descent at a normal rate of descent while adding flaps if necessary. When at a 90-degree point from the landing runway, the pilot will turn to the final leg of the pattern. Final Leg The final leg of the pattern should be spent finalizing the approach, taking musiknote of the aircrafts configuration, airspeed, altitude, and descent rate. When on the appropriate glide path, the pilot will be at the recommended airspeed for the specific aircraft, descending at a moderate rate and in a normal position to land with flaps and gear extended as necessary. During the final leg of the pattern, the pilot descends all the way to the runway for landing. Upwind Leg During the approach, many things can happen that can cause a pilot to go around or execute a missed approach. A nother aircraft on the runway, an unstable approach or the presence of wake turbulence can mean that a pilot will choose not to land, but will execute a missed approach or a go-around, in which case the pilot adds full (or takeoff) power, climbs away from the ground, and reconfigures the aircraft for the climb. During this time, the pilot should join the upwind part of the pattern, which is offset to the right side of the runway (for a standard left pattern) slightly. The upwind leg would then be flown until in a position to turn to the crosswind leg. Entry to the Pattern The entry into a traffic pattern should, when possible, be made from a 45-degree point to the downwind leg, joining the downwind leg of the pattern around the mid-field point, or with at least enough time for the pilot to configure the aircraft for a normal approach. Exiting the Pattern Departures from the pattern should, when possible, be flown from the departure or upwind leg, either straight out or at a 45-degree angle in the direction of the pattern on the crosswind leg. NOTE ansicht are guidelines only. Arrivals at non-towered airports often come from all directions, and departures often depart to any direction the pilot chooses. Care should be taken to remain vigilant in positively identifying traffic inbound and outbound in all cases. Exercise caution and make timely radio calls at all times.
